An autumn update

Posted on | October 17, 2014 | 1 Comment

I'm here, just quieter than usual in the blog world (again, find me on Instagram - littletreesandme).  It's October on the homestead & Juniper is nearly 6 months old.  SIX. MONTHS. OLD.  How did that happen?  Hazel is every bit in love with her as the day she was born, and I am loving this stage of their sisterhood, as they seem to really have a bond and crack each other up.  I can imagine it's only going to get more fun. We've been busy painting our house before the lovely Pacific Northwest rains start, and also juggling work & childcare.  We've also been busy hiking up a storm on some of these sunny falls days, as I know they won't last forever.  A quick update in photos below:

I'm a lucky lady indeed.

Autumn love

My sister flew in all the way from Michigan this week, & it was only the second time Hazel has met her (first being only 3 months old).  I warned my sister that H has been a bit timid of strangers as of late, so don't expect her to cling on immediately.  Boy was I wrong!  The minute she saw her Hazel smiled and reached out.  I watch their interaction together and H is always making sure Jamie (my sis) is watching her, always reaching for her.  It's beautiful how a child can just sense family and who a person is.

We did a little photo shoot in the fall leaves.  This week the leaves hit their peak and seemed to all fall overnight.  I love love love this weather & feel so blessed my sister could be here to see it.

Blueberries & egg yolk for breakfast with Aunt Jamie!
Jamie stays here until Sunday, and it's already going too fast.  I hope someday she can live out here with us - she fits right in with the community, & I believe Hazel may not have it any other way.

Simply ten good things:

Here's a list of goodness to end the day, to slow it all down, to plant us right where we are, and to carry it with us as we continue the week.  Here is my list of goodness:

1. Pumpkin, pumpkins, pumpkins!  Getting ready for a costume party we're hosting on Thursday.
2. Covered bridges - gotta love Oregon
3. Spiderwebs.  Because it's October, duh!
4. Koosah Falls
5. Our little nature loving soul
6. Autumn colors just fill me up with joy
7. The rain has come back.  The earth needed it (even if we didn't)
8. Hazel feeling the wet leaves, completely enamored
9. A little hike with some other baby friends
10. Toasted pumpkin seeds - I can't stop eating them!

Roloff Farms

Posted on | October 17, 2012 | 2 Comments

We recently visited Roloff Farms up near Portland - & let me tell you, it was fantastic!  I've always been a fan of the television show 'little people big world,' even though I haven't had cable for over two years now.  If you haven't seen it - it's a reality tv show about a family of little people (actually three of their kids are average height) that live on a successful homestead that started with only a few acres and an old farm house.  They are now a successful farm & both the parents are motivational speakers/authors and have done some wonderful volunteer work.  I've always wanted to visit them since moving to Oregon, & October is the one time they open it to the public (they are a pumpkin farm).

I was telling Brad on the way up that I really was hoping to meet at least one of the Roloffs.  He laughed and told me not to expect it, so I let it go & assumed I wouldn't meet them.

But alas...

Amy Roloff, the mother, was there right as we walked up!  She was so sweet & we chatted for a couple of minutes.  Hazel loved her, too.

We then proceeded to the pumpkin patch & snapped a few photos.  H was in such a good mood & enamored with the pumpkins.

Before we left we took a tour of their property.  The parents built so many fabulous things for their kids over the years, one of which was old buildings together called 'Western Town.'  When we got to western town I was pleasantly surprised to see their son Zach Roloff meet us there!  He was a very nice dude indeed.

Meet & tour the Roloff family farm: check!

Oregon bliss

I still get dumbfounded by how late the seasons are here. When I traveled home to Michigan, over two months ago, the leaves were beginning to peak.  They have already gotten snow flurries and are now lucky to hit a high of 30's (the upper peninsula of MI, that is).  Back here in our little rainforest, the leaves are finally reaching their demise, the wise trees beginning a new cycle.  I was lucky enough to catch a few photos before coastal storms hit over the last few days, taking away the radiant colors of our neck of the woods.  Can I share them with you, pretty please?

It's also hazelnut harvest this time of year, and I had a fabulous date with a local orchard below.

And no April slideshow would be complete without some belly photos taken on our driveway and back yard, don't ya' know.

Here is the true secret to these shots:

Rain jacket and umbrella.  We are definitely in Oregon!

...

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.  Any big plans, friends?

Upper Peninsula

Posted on | September 29, 2011 | No Comments

The past two weeks have been a whirlwind.  It included six am flights, conversations with my grandmother, and layovers nearly resulting in a night spent in San Franciso with our poor boy Gus at home awaiting a potty break.  Since getting back on Friday  I've worked so much barely I could catch a potty break.  Until today.

Where've I been?  Home.  The upper peninsula of Michigan, well she's a crafty one.  She welcomed us with sleet and a balmy 29 degrees as we pulled into my mother's parking lot.  The chill throughout the week reminded me of mornings spent with just lake Michigan and a cup of coffee, marching band with fresh frost on the grass.  It felt odd, like forgetting the words to your favorite song.

Her colors were changing, a whole season ahead of us.  I spent a lot of time behind the lens, capturing the UP I once knew so well.  She was foreign, with her wind howling and her wildlife greeting me at every milepost.  I visited an island I once knew as a child, the beach I caught my first fish at.   I witnessed a couple say their vows under a cherry tree in an apple orchard; the only wedding I've been to that nearly matched my own.  One of my favorite moments was spent at a two hundred year old cemetery with my sister and our other halves, somehow calmed by graves that have seen far more than any of us.

Looking back, I am grateful for my trip.  There were lessons learned regarding many of my family members; arguments lost and hugs that may be the last.  But mother UP does not judge or envy, she simply cools the air and conjures up nostalgia I didn't know I had.

She will always be home.
