An autumn update

Posted on | October 17, 2014 | 1 Comment

I'm here, just quieter than usual in the blog world (again, find me on Instagram - littletreesandme).  It's October on the homestead & Juniper is nearly 6 months old.  SIX. MONTHS. OLD.  How did that happen?  Hazel is every bit in love with her as the day she was born, and I am loving this stage of their sisterhood, as they seem to really have a bond and crack each other up.  I can imagine it's only going to get more fun. We've been busy painting our house before the lovely Pacific Northwest rains start, and also juggling work & childcare.  We've also been busy hiking up a storm on some of these sunny falls days, as I know they won't last forever.  A quick update in photos below:

I'm a lucky lady indeed.

{december 22 & we're out hiking in sixty degree weather - amazing!}

Dec 6 (+ an epic video!)

Today was one of our days off as a family (the ONE we get in two weeks!) so we decided to take H up to see some snow!  We took her sledding, hiking, and let her taste and play in the snow.  She was SO thrilled the minute we got there, she couldn't stop staring & giggling at all of the snow.  The photo below was taken at the end of the day when she was very tired but I still love it, since we get family shots so rarely.  I decided to also include a video of her first sledding encounter ... it's rad!

{winter hike, family shot!}

{I am in LOVE with this video & how excited H is}

Coastal retreat

Posted on | September 25, 2012 | No Comments

Last weekend we celebrated our anniversary on the coast.  We've brought Hazel to the ocean only two other times - the first she was just 3 weeks old, and the second was a quick day trip with some friends, she was about 5 months.  But this time it was different.  The weather was lovely and we rented a fabulous house right on the beach.  We got to our house and within 15 minutes went straight to the ocean to exercise the dogs.  While B played ball with the pups, Hazel and I played in the sand.  This was her first time feeling sand, and she was entranced by it.  She couldn't stop smiling, seriously.

 Dogs!

Later that evening B & I started making dinner in the fantastic kitchen (local fish & quinoa/veggies, yumm!).  We also popped open some wine from our wedding.  The upstairs of the house had a wall of windows facing the ocean - it was breathtaking.  Hazel had a fantastic night scooting around, playing with the dogs, eating local squash, & she even got to stay up slightly late with mom and dad

The next morning we got up early, made breakfast (it was so nice to bring our own food instead of going out to eat), and drove just a few miles south to a area called Cape Perpetua.  There are miles and miles of hiking trails.  We decided to check out some trails right along the shoreline, being high tide we knew there'd be awesome sights.  The photo below is an area called 'spouting horn.'

It was a bit chilly - it probably didn't get above 50 all morning/afternoon.  That didn't slow us down, or put a frown on H's face!

Some friends of ours were due to show up later that afternoon, but we had an hour or two to kill after our hikes and lunch.  B went to the mouth of the Yachats River & wet a line - I love watching him in his element.  Hazel and I sat on a bench and watched the ocean & people, sipping on a hot latte.

Our friends came & we did a lot more walking, mainly on the beach.  Hazel was absolutely spent when we got back to the house!  Case in point:

Later that night the four of us (& the babes!) made dinner and played games.  It was wonderful spending time with friends.  There were multiple times we laughed so hard our cheeks hurt - that was way overdue!

The next day B and I went for another walk, loving every minute of the early morning salt air.  Our friends & their babe sleep in later than Hazel which I used to be jealous of.  But I've slowly been realizing what I've been missing in the mornings that I used to spend sleeping.

Later that morning we hit up the beach again - the girls couldn't get enough!

I also flew a kite for the first time since I was a kid, so fun!

Later that afternoon we went to the Oregon Coast Aquarium just up the road.  I knew Hazel would be interested in the sights, but I didn't know to what extent.  She was absolutely thrilled every minute we were there!  She'd reach out to the colorful fish, her legs kicking excitedly with the occasional yells and loud squeals of delight.  I got so much joy out of seeing this!

She especially loved the shark tank, we were completely surrounded by fish!

I am slightly in love with the photo below - it's so silly!

Te girls being turtles:

That evening we went for a final walk on the beach.  We were tempted to stay one final night (our friends were) but our mostly indoor cat ran away the day we left, and our neighbor hadn't found him yet.  I was so worried throughout most of this trip that I sadly convinced B to go home a day early.  Of course the cat came running to the front door the minute we got home!

That evening we drove home along the coast as the sun was beginning to set.  Every single view was stellar, it took a lot of self control not to stop every mile and shoot photos.  Finally I couldn't take it & asked B to stop the car.  I got out and snapped a few photos, taking in the amazing beauty I was so privileged to be a part of.  I got back in the car and caught sight of dear H snoozing in her car seat, only to realize that beauty is always with me.  She and B bring it to me every. single. day.

Umpqua goodness

Posted on | August 8, 2012 | 2 Comments

We just got back from spending a couple of days camping on the North Umpqua River.  Let me tell you about this river - it is magical and just gorgeous.  So so so blue, and the highway that follows it is called 'the highway of waterfalls' ... I've posted many photos on here in the past of waterfalls just from that river alone.  B loves it for the fly fishing even more than the hiking.  It's a river that allows artificial flies and catch and release only - great conservation, something B has always found important.  So naturally we took Hazel there.  Six months and already on her second camping trip, what a lucky lady.

The second day we drove about a half an hour up to Crater Lake National Park.  We used to live very close to this park when we lived in the high desert, but we haven't been here in years.  It was indeed time to take Hazel.  It was the first time we used her little backpack.  She loved it at first, but got nervous after a bit & ended up in the ergo.  Closer to mama's milk, I suppose?

There is only one accessible spot to swim in the entire park.  It's a little over a mile hike downhill and not many people venture down there.  I went about five years ago with a friend and participated in some fantastic cliff jumping - I told B we must do this (while baby watches safely from shore, of course)!  B was hesitant but once he saw kids doing it I think he felt obliged.  It was so rejunvinating on such a hot, sunny day.  Hazel got to enjoy some of the water as well, as you can see below.

We drove back to camp later that evening and hiked watson falls (the 2nd highest waterfall in OR!).  Brad did a bit of fly fishing and caught a beautiful steelhead as well.  It was pure bliss. We went home the next day (after some relaxing beach and swimming time) and Hazel slept soooo good.  She always sleeps through the night after an outing like that.

I feel so grateful that despite our crazy schedules we're able to get out as a family every once in a while.  I love our day to day life but trips like these fill up our souls even more!

What kind soul filling family outings do you like to do?

Mount Pisgah

Posted on | July 3, 2012 | 2 Comments

I've been itching to go hiking lately, and of course it's been raining a good majority of June.  Finally yesterday it was sunny and I had a day off.  I am usually too timid to hike alone with the babe (in the wilderness) but today I decided it was time!  I drove above twenty minutes from home to a beautiful area to hike Mount Pisgah, a 3+ mile hike up (up & up!) a gorgeous butte overlooking the Willamette Valley.  I was stopped a half dozen times by people telling me what an adventurous mother I am, which made me feel great.

Hazel absolutely loved it.  I only had my camera phone with me but was able to capture some special images below.  I love pic in the middle - Hazel's expression was priceless, she was so awestruck.

I took a video of her at the top.  When she is excited and happy about something she makes this sound that's a combination of a laugh and a cough, haha.  It is unfortunately sideways and not the best quality, but it makes me smile (don't mind the neck fart mama gives Hazel midway through!).

I think we have a hiker on our hands!

First camping trip:

Posted on | June 24, 2012 | 4 Comments

We were very fortunate this past weekend to have an unexpected day off on top of our one day off a pay period we already had.  We quickly looked at the weather forecast and jumped at the chance to take baby Hazel on her first camping trip to the Umpqua River, B's favorite place in the world.  I suited her up in her onesie made by a friend of mine with 'lil camper' written on it, which happened to be the perfect size.

Standing next to the fire pit when we got there, already having a blast.

Shortly after she went down for an afternoon nap.

Friends of ours joined us late, so Hazel happily stayed up past her bedtime watching the fire on momma's lap.

Who do you think got her the red wings hat?

Good morning!  She slept so good next to momma all night and woke up with this look, a bit confused where we were.

I adore the picture below.  She was actually looking past the mobile and up at the tree tops, smiling.

Papa and H waiting for mom to go hiking!

On our way to one of momma's favorite waterfalls!

Back at camp, just hanging out while we eat lunch.

Daddy went fishing so we ventured down river a bit, cooling off on this hot day.  What you don't see if Hazel immediately cried when I touched her toes in the water (sooo cold!).  Sorry H!

Snuggles from momma make it all better.

Back at camp for dinner, and the moquitos were out in full force.  How awesome is this bug netting?

Popcorn by the fire with our wonderful friends!

Night night...

Hazel's morning nap while mom and dad packed up camp!

Asleep by 7 pm that night, slept for twelve hours, camping really took it out of her!

As you can see, we had an absolutely wonderful time.  B got to go fly fishing a few times, which he certainly needed.  Hazel slept great both nights (better than us, actually) and she seemed to truly enjoy being out in nature, constantly smiling and giggling.  It was lovely to be with friends we hadn't seen in a while, and also to spend time together as a family (especially if you read my previous post!).

Can't wait for our next adventure.

Ps: Thank you for all of the comments on my previous post!  It is refreshing to hear that others feel the same way and make it work as well.  Thank you thank you thank you!  Keep me updated if you find the secret to balancing it all ... :)
