Rest in peace sweet Haley:

Our beloved dog Haley passed away yesterday. She has been with us from the great lakes to the high desert to the pacific ocean. She was an expert at begging/food stealing (including a entire plate of christmas cookies, a birthday cake, a whole pizza to name a few).  She was hiking at Puck Lake with us when Brad proposed, stood loyally in our wedding, and was the first to greet baby Hazel just hours after she was born.  She taught us to live in the moment, to love deeply & loyally.  I made this video for B yesterday (she was the first gal in his life, pre-April) as he was burying her on our property.  I wanted to post it here to share how much we loved her.

We will miss you forever big H!

December 25: Merry Christmas!

Posted on | December 25, 2012 | No Comments

I hope all of you had a blessed christmas day!  We had a mellow day at home with just the three of us, which is amazing due to the rarity of having holidays off together.  We woke up to presents, went for a short hike, and made delicious meals.  Unfortunately tonight has been spent with our 12 year old pup who suddenly is not wanting to get up and is having labored breathing, despite hiking happily today alongside us.  We're worried and unsure what to do.  I'm sure we'll end up at the vet in the am if not tonight if this keeps up. Keep her in your thoughts and/or prayers.

{christmas morning, two separate agendas}

Update: The pup (Haley) was brought to the vet early the 26th... they gave her some antibiotics & pain meds & said there wasn't much they could do besides watch/wait.  Haley is lifting her head up & going out to potty, eating very small amounts of rice as of now (12:30 am the 27th).  We're hoping it's uphill from here but also on the other hand, if it's her time we want it to be as pain free and easy as possible.  Suggestions welcome.

The past seven days, I've slept at night.  Can you believe it?  Four years of handling emergencies at three am and hittin' the sack while others get their morning cup o' joe - it feels a bit surreal.  I haven't worked very many evening shifts due to my new ten hour shift position, so we will see how the new team works (obstetric nursing is big time into the team work of coworkers - it makes or breaks your shift) come this weekend.  Either way, I'm still sleeping next to the husb at night; and that alone is worth it.

In other news - we built the chicken coop over the weekend!  I took the ladies out for an hour yesterday to explore close to their soon to be home, and it was fantastic.  The once furry easter chicks are now teeangers raring to get out in the real world, their mother being just a ready (a dusty bathroom is not a happy one).  About three weeks and they will be fully feathered young adults.

Isn't it puuurty?

In other home-steady news, I've been growing an array of seedlings over the last couple of weeks.  A big goal of mine is to expand my garden and grow more edibles this year - this goal involves taking out several large ferns on the property due to their wonderful 'only sun we get in the yard' location.  Here are some sugar snap peas and spinach hard at work in the dining room.

Love this photo - Emma is also aching for spring

Unfortunately my eldest cat, Eddie, discovered the dozen or so sugar snap peas I was growing and narrowed it down to about four shortly after I snapped these photos.  Perhaps he's giving me a little taste of what our local deer will be like come summer?   The seedling are now balancing on small high stools close to windows, no room for hungry cats to devour my hard work.

So as you can see, I'm hard at work at those new year's resolutions.  I truly feel at ease living a bit more simply, and I learn something new everyday.  It's keeping me level headed and relaxed before our next fertilty endeavor in May and I have realized over these last few days that I also feel a bit more in tune with what kind of mother I soon want to be - to teach my child the simple things, a down to earth approach to the day to day rhythm of life.  I want her to gather eggs with me each morning and watch tomatoes grow in our soil, rich with compost we helped make with simple table scraps.  I want her to see a mother and father who truly love one another, love their home, and treat animals like family.

I'm ready.

Chicks, the new kids.

I had a lovely photo op with three of my chicks this afternoon.  Yeah, you read that correctly.

A buff named Willow glared at me shyly.

Hazel dressed up her feathers nicely.

And Milah let me know exactly how she felt about being away from her flock.

I compiled my favorites in collages below:

Can you imagine how I'll be with real children?

Nothings gonna' change my world

I woke up to a burning throat this am; a slow incineration overnight, a sad realization that mother's faith in airborne did not work.  However I am one of those folks that pretend their not sick when they truly are.  So today I cleaned the garage, the house, got groceries, and hit up the hardware store - all with my lovely of course.  He is my own personal cough medicine, after all.

This afternoon admist cleaning I perused the interweb.  I came across this quote in a fantastic blog - 'someday you will miss today.'  I stared at the computer screen with awe - so simple, yet so true.  I walked over to our dining room window, coffee in hand.  I caught a doe chomping on grass through the fresh powder than coated our property overnight.  I can't quite explain the peace I felt in that moment, knowing how true that quote surely is.

I've always looked forward, yearning for what's next.  But today I realized - what's the harm in relishing the current affair of your life?  I can gaurantee I will miss today, someday.

So to appreciate this someday memory, I trekked the property, taking in the supposed 'winter storm' of Western Oregon '11 (a whopping 3 inches that closed county schools, yo).

Have I mentioned that I'm falling more in love with our home everyday?

I have two questions for you

Posted on | February 17, 2011 | 3 Comments

I grew up with bangs as a young child.  When I entered elementary school, the tomboy in me refused to brush my hair let alone maintain bangs.  Twenty five years later, I cut bangs again.  After a year of bangs I started growing these out last September, that incessant tomboy in me is relentless after all.  But alas I have a hair appointment on Friday.

What I'm getting around to is:

Bangs

or,

No bangs?

I'm currently in this halfway state:

Please, I'm begging for honest advice here!  To tell you the truth, I'm leaning more towards continuing to grow them out.  They are such a hassle, and I pull them back for all of my hobbies.  But boy can they dress up an outfit.

((My total of one girly post of the month is finished.  I apologize for the inconvenience.))

...

Onto my 2'nd question.

Do my new furry friends just make you want to squeal with delight?

Only 5 months until we have eggs!

I met a boy.

Okay, time to confess.

I've been seeing this boy every evening while my husband is at work. He is pensive, loves the outdoors, and surprisingly smells of lavender and mint. Sometimes we watch a film and cuddle (all on his say, of course). Other days I tell him of my troubles while he carefully listens, only chiming in when necessary. Tonight we shared tuna fish for dinner, and then danced in the living room to Gustavo Santaolalla. He loves when we dance, did I mention that?

His name is Eddie. He's at the ripe age of five feline years. And have I mentioned that he rocks my socks?

Ps: TWO entries in one day? Yeah I'm that good.

Our "oops" child

Posted on | January 28, 2010 | 3 Comments

On an ordinary day in May '08, our nine year old lab refused to go poop (sorry, it's the easiest way to say it).  She would walk around the yard squatting invisible turds of nothingness, slowly becoming a bloated mess.  So naturally, we took her to the vet.  Of course this turned out to be constipation ($200 dollars worth of constipation).  Our vet nonchalantely said as we were leaving, "she's probably only has 1 or 2 good years left."  A plump breeder, we'll call her Devious, chimed in and said they have the best English Labradors in Southern Oregon.  B naturally is interested as Devious tells him how she has puppies a bit too old to sell full price so we'll get one at half - "They make fabulous hunting dogs - and OH you should see them with children!"  We slept on this a day or two and one morning B said "I think we'll go get that dog!"  I mumbled something like, "err okay zzz" while I lay in bed partially conscious.  Later as we drove to a little farm in the rural high desert of Oregon, it hit me - why are we getting a third dog?  I immediately envisioned insane amounts of yellow hair and a broken down pooper scooper.  But oh how a puppy face and woo you.

Long story short, above is the result of our impromtu good will - Gus.  Of course the older lab is healthy as a horse so now the house is full of two labradors and my loverly mutt (a whole other rescue story).  We certainly get our exercise trying to tire the kids out, and my vacuum may catch on fire from the twice daily use, but they are our family

Here is Gus just a week ago hiking with me.

Unfortunately this week the G-Man has been rather nauseous.  Well that's largely understated; he has been vomiting up a storm.  B and I are both medical professionals and did not worry since this silly lab always has gastrointestinal bugs, and he was drinking, peeeing/pooping, & as always his silly old self.  This went on four tedious days.  Finally today we trekked our butts to the vet.  Gus had some x-rays and I was immediately phoned to by the vet saying he needs emergency surgery and there is a "blockage" in his intestines.   Low and behold, this was found in his gut ...

Yes that's right, half of a tennis ball.  Where he found this we do not know.  This house is void of tennis balls and the dog park is much to muddy this time of  year for a frollick.  He's never been a chewer or eater, he's more of a I will bring this to you sort of pup.  The vet said we got him there just in time.  The tech snobbily asked "How exactly did this happen?" while snatching my debit card like a ravenous coyote.  I guess she never knew dogs like balls, and labs like to eat.  I guess she likes to make customers feel horrible.  Anywho. They let him come home this evening, and here is what my little man is up to as I type, almost two grand later.

Dumb dog, yet I can't help but love him.
