On choices made
Posted on | November 13, 2012 | 5 Comments
My sister has come & gone, and I have been left feeling slightly sad and homesick (although home now feels like Oregon, hmph?!). We spent a majority of the week simply hanging out around the house, talking, and playing with Hazel. We also took my sister to the coast, as it was her first time ever seeing an ocean. Here are a few photos of our phenomenal week:
Visiting Heceta Head lighthouse & the haunted keeper's house!
Sea lions, SO loud!
Dancing with Aunt Jamie
Sisters!
Local seafood for lunch
This photo cracks me up!
I went 'out' for the first time!
I've spent my week so far reminiscing about her visit, looking at photos & re-telling stories. I honestly feel as if I belong and thrive in Oregon, and I don't often feel sad about being so far away from family. But every once in a while it hits me: we're alone out here, just our little family of three. Our family is magical and so so so fulfilling - but we won't be spending the holidays laughing around a large table filled with crazy Burklund ladies in Michigan, getting to know our nieces and nephew in Italy, or seeing a set of grandparents regularly in Washington. We made that choice, and I just have to accept that.
To my other blog friends with family oh so far away - how do you cope with family so far away, especially with the upcoming holiday season?

I find it harder and harder to be away from family the older my kids get...b/c they miss them, too! I wish I had some helpful words, but I don't...but I can completely relate to what you are feeling! <3

Great photos! Looks like the weather was good for you as well!
We live in Portland and my husband's family is in Texas and mine in Chicago. It is hard. Really hard. Especially around the holidays. And now that Finn is 5, we decided we need to be home on Christmas, or else he misses out on Santa. So, holidays have sort of switched to being about the family I grew up with to focused on the family I have now. And, thank goodness for friends so that we still have folks to share experiences with!

I really understand how you feel. I'm the same way in that I usually don't feel bothered about being far from Nebraska where our families are. But, the nostalgia usually creeps in during the holiday season, and I start to miss my family. For us, though, the holidays are really special because we make them our own. We usually do something low-key, which is perfectly our style...and a chaotic Christmas isn't really what we're looking for anyway. I just try to keep it in perspective. Oregon is the home of our hearts too.

I can relate! Talking to my mom and sister on the phone regularly really helps. And that my mom visits often.
Big hug to you! Hope we get to see you at Holiday Market soon.
